MINUTES OF JANUARY 15, 2002 PTA MEETING

Present: Dr. Trippett, Mr. Beall, Mrs. Heising, Ms. McFarland, Mrs. Brown, Mrs. Downs, Mrs. Fletcher, Mrs. Metz, Mrs. Hackett.

Meeting called to order at 7:15.

The monthly meeting was moved to the 15th from the 8th due to proximity to the return to school.

Readings of Minutes and Treasurer's report were waived.

Our Secretary, Mrs. Wicks, is leaving Deale due to moving out of the area. We wish her the best of luck in her move, and thank her for her devoted service to the school and PTA. Mr. Beall took notes and Mrs. Metz will post them while we await volunteers to fill the Secretary position. Interested volunteers should contact PTA through the school office.

PTA functions for the near future have been rescheduled to better accommodate the school and activity schedule. Please note:

The Valentine's Dance and Winter Fun Fest will be sponsored by the second grades on Friday, February 8 from 7-9 pm. There will be games, music and prizes. Cost of participation will be $2 per student or $5 per family of 3 or more. No drop offs, please. If parents cannot stay with their children, please make arrangements for children to accompany a responsible adult. Snacks will be served, but not dinner.

The Talent Show will be held Tuesday, February 12. More details will come home with students. Parents wishing to help should contact the school office and leave a message for Mrs. Ballinger. PTA members are encouraged to participate in the show.

The Used Book sale has been moved to March 2 to help kick off Reading Month. Parents can contribute used books during February by bringing them to the school. All books are welcome, but no magazines or Adult-Only material. Volunteers are needed to sort books the week before the sale and to set up on Friday the 1st. Book prices will be as low as 5 cents. Books not sold will be donated to a charity that uses them for reading materials and recycles them for building materials to help the underprivileged in Appalachia.

The response on the rented risers for the stage that were used at the winter concert was overwhelming. Because the risers could be used for other school events as well as concerts, the PTA has decided to buy a set for the school rather than rent them as needed. Mrs. Dew is gathering prices. The PTA voted to approve funding up to $6000 if needed to buy the risers. Over $300 was gathered in donations at the gate to offset the cost of renting the risers, and PTA paid the balance.

Mrs. Heising will handle the Spirit Wear Sales in place of Mrs. Wicks. The usual sweat gear will be offered as well as polo shirts. Orders have already started coming in.

Mrs. Hackett presented information on the individual earphones that will be required for students using school computers. The cost will be $1.99 per pair. The regular cost of these would be $5.00 but we are getting a discount. The Media Specialists will help maintain the earphones in plastic at the school to minimize lost sets, but the School Store will stock extra sets if needed. The individual earphones were requested as more sanitary than the shared headsets currently used in the Computer Lab.

Funds were approved in the amount of $150, to purchase adapter cables to allow students to plug in their individual earphones without have to move the computer in order to gain access to the headset connectors. These will be in place prior to the start of use of the new earphones.

There was no CAC report, but Mr. Costa has volunteered to work with Mrs. Fletcher on CAC, and will also represent Deale to the SEA representative.

PTA will be assisting the fifth grades in setting up the candy fundraiser for their Williamsburg overnight trip in March. Each student's candy sales will be credited to a personal account to cover costs of students and parents. PTA has already funded $2000 of the trip costs.

Since the Talent Show is scheduled for February 12th, which would be our PTA meeting, the February meeting will be held on February 19th.

Meeting adjourned at 8:30.
