From the Captain:
As we come to the close of another school year, we pause to count our blessings and realize our success for the past year. In the last year, we have seen our children grow academically and socially. They reflect the efforts of the school and home working together in raising our boys and girls to be responsible people. We are all giving our children the tools they will need to be self-sufficient and productive members of our community. Even more important, we are instilling attitudes of care and love for each other. I continue to believe that Deale is the best school and community in the entire state if not country. Thank you all for making it the best school and best year yet. God bless each and every one, and may you all have a safe and happy summer.

Sincerely,
Michael E. Trippett, Ed.D.

We would like to congratulate our First Mates of the Week for the month of May. They are Charles S. in Mrs. Brown's class and Dominic M. in Mrs. Dusak's class.

Honor Roll
We would like to recognize Garrett W. for making the Honor Roll for the third marking period. His name was not included in the last newsletter. Congratulations, Garrett.

Summer Academy
Again this year, Summer Academy will be held at Deale Elementary. This is a great opportunity for everyone to include this program as a part of their continuing summer education and enjoyment.. Yes, enjoyment! It's not the same old summer school. It's just three hours a day for the month of July. It's a great way to fill that summer void and avoid the summer "I forgot what I did last year." It strengthens skills and memory and it tastes good too. So, we look forward to seeing many Deale students here this summer.

Changes Changes Changes
For the coming year, there will be changes which will improve safety issues in our school. Rolling backpacks are discouraged at Deale Elementary after this year. They do not fit in the lockers and there is no space to store them in the classrooms. They are so loud, rolling down the halls during arrival and dismissal, that students and teachers cannot hear important announcements being made. They have occasionally caused accidental tripping and falling in the hallways. If you feel your child's backpack is too heavy, please discuss the issue with your child's teacher.

Beginning with the 2002-2003 school year, students will not be allowed in the building until 8:00 a.m. Supervision is not provided before that time. This should give you adequate time to make arrangements for next year.

On May 21, 2002, the Maryland State Department of Education accepted a recommendation to change the entry date to school. The phase-in plan will move the age of entry one month a year until the date of entry becomes September 1. Beginning in the fall of 2002, children must be four by November 30 to be eligible for entry to pre-kindergarten. Children five by December 31 will still be eligible for entry to kindergarten in 2002. The phase-in plan is attached. Anne Arundel County follows state regulations for age of entry and does not consider early admission to either pre-kindergarten or kindergarten. However, early admission to first grade is an option during the year in which students are eligible for kindergarten.

Thank You
The teachers and staff would like to express their sincere thanks to the PTA and parents who provided such a wonderful luncheon, notes and treats during Teacher appreciation Week. It was so thoughtful of everyone to take the time to show their appreciation in so many ways. Thank you!

Exceptional Transportation Forms
Any child who needs to ride a bus, other than their home bus next year, must pick up an Exceptional Transportation Request Form from the office, fill it out and have it on file by the end of June. Taking care of this now helps to prevent confusion at the beginning of the school year.

Transfers
If your child will not be attending Deale Elementary next year, please notify the office immediately. Paperwork must be completed by our office in order for your child to transfer to another school.

Lunch Money Loans
There are still a few students who owe lunch money that they have borrowed during the course of this year. Please return the money as soon as possible so that we can close our books. Final notices will be sent home on Tuesday, June 4th.

A. A. Co. Science Fair
Congratulations to the following students who were chosen to enter their projects in the Anne Arundel County Science Fair.
